In case you were curious: the AGD (American Gage Design) protocol, for the purpose of standardization, specifies many of a dial-indicator's characteristics, among them the dial diameter (Group 1 is 1-1/2; Group 2 is 2; and so on, up to Group 4), a stem diameter of 3/8, and yellow dials for metric indicators. Non-AGD indicators (typically meant for the international market) usually have 8mm stems, though you can find special-purpose indicators that otherwise conform to AGD but have a variety of stem diameters. Mounting via the stem is the most common and practical method, so this detail can be very important.
